UConn Baseball Team Ousted From Big East Tournament By South Florida

The University of Connecticut baseball team was ousted from the Big East Championship Saturday in Clearwater, Fla., after losing two games to the University of South Florida.

In the first game, which UConn lost 1-0, UConn sophomore lefthander Brian Ward of Milford allowed just one hit, but it was the only hit that mattered ? a home run by South Florida's Jimmy Falla in the top of the fourth.

USF senior righthander Derrick Stultz (9-1) pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out four. Stultz this season has given up no runs and seven hits in 15 innings against UConn.

Ward (3-5) struck out six and walked four in his first start since facing USF on May 13. Junior righthander Pat Butler pitched 3? scoreless innings out of the bullpen in his third relief appearance of the season. He walked four and struck out three.

Falla had the only two hits of the game for the Bulls. He singled in the eighth, but was picked off first by catcher Joe Pavone. For the Huskies, junior second baseman LJ Mazzilli, Tom Verdi and left fielder Eric Yavarone all singled.

In the second game, a 2-1 win for South Florida, UConn struck first with a run in the sixth inning. Senior first baseman Tim Martin lined a two-out double off the wall in right and scored on a single past third by Mazzilli.

Freshman righthander Carson Cross, in his second start of the season for UConn, went 5 ? innings, giving up no runs on four hits and striking out one.

Junior righthander Dan Feehan came on in relief with two on and two out in the sixth and ended the inning on a groundball to first on just one pitch. In the seventh, things fell apart for Feehan (1-2) after a walk, base hit and balk put two in scoring position with nobody out. Two wild pitches by Feehan brought in the tying and winning runs.

UConn had a runner on second with no one out in the ninth but could not score.

The Huskies finished 31-27-1. The Bulls play St. John's Sunday at noon for the tournament title.
